Review about George Eliot’s novel “The mill on the floss”
As we studies about Victorian age in many novelist, poets, writer
and how the Victorian society in changes and reality of Victorian age people.
George Eliot has feminist writer and she is most of the work in women are
center in novel. She was one of the prominent novelists of 19th
century. her novel in full of psychology and how men physical relation to
women, and women are work and not equal to men in their ideas in her most of
novel into found them. Here I review about her famous and notorious novel “The
mill on the floss”. In this novel, is an autobiographical novel and is
identified with her childhood. In this novel she presets her father, mother,
aunt, brother servants with ‘almost painful fidelity’. It is a tragedy that
moves the readers, and how her childhood life in found in this novel. Here
protagonist characters are sister and brother as Maggie and Tom. They are the
children of the innocent but haughty and obstinate Mr. Tulliver, the miller of
Dorlcote mill on the floss. Tom and Maggie have opposing qualities of
characters. Tom is possess, narrow minded where as Maggie representing George
Eliot is a girl of intend sensibility having deep emotional feeling and
artistic tastes. She is love and care of
her father and brother, and how Eliot portrayed herself in Maggie character.
in novel we see that in Tom and Maggie
has good relation and how Tom has own
self as intelligent and Maggie love to her neighbor’s friend Philip . Tom does not like Maggie’s love for Philip
wakens the son of lawyer wakem, who is supposed to be the evil angel of the
family and mainly responsible for the ruin of the Tulliver’s family. Under the
command of her brother, Maggie stops to have all relations with Philip. After
the death of her father, Maggie leaves the mill and goes to visit her cousin
Lucy and also we see that Maggie’s
relations to her mother has bad and her mother has evil them to Maggie life and
how her aunt has to anger and cruel to her. In novel, Lucy marriage to Stephen
guest. He is attracted towards Maggie and the girl also responds to the call of
Stephen. When Tom knows all about them and he is disturbed, upset, and angry.
And there is an argument again and ill felling is created between the brother
and sister. One day, a flood comes in the town and we see that Maggie forgets
all enmity and goes out to rescue her brother form the flood. Both are want way and how their situation has
badly them and move out in a boat. We see that Tom and Maggie are reconciled at
the end but unfortunately the boat goes down into the swirling water of the
flood and they are drowned. In their death, they were reconciled. We see that
Maggie gives her life in an effort to save her brother and in this
attempt. She shows unselfish devotion to
her brother and that was her motive form her childhood. George Eliot has
presented the climax the final incident in her novel by the use of the river as
recurrent symbol thought out the novel. The readers also find the background of
county side which exhibits George Eliot’s interest in nature and country
surroundings. The characters of Maggie are charming. The novel is more
psychological than ethical in character and the style is poetic and graphic at places.
according to linen Stevenson ‘The mill on the floss’, than is not merely a
fervent investigation of love from a human’s point of view, but is also a
truthful unveiling of the author’s in this novel in her own feelings.
We see
that in this novel many a time political, geographical and social life
portrayed to George Eliot and how her childhood in Maggie character in see
that. So we conclude that in brother and sister relation has to truth one and
how the reader has to the end of the novel in climax and became tragedy of
Maggie life and she is scarified to their life and also she is unhappy to her
mother, and bother. And we see that Maggie character is represented to George
Eliot herself and her childhood. In
novel Eliot gives ideas about psychological and realism in novel and how Maggie
behaviors in novel at that time at George Eliot life.
